Medical Issues on Shabbat
October 24, 31& November 7
8:00-8:45 pm
In this three-week course,
we will study one of the more challenging issues that Torah Jewis face onShabbat. When may one set aside Rabbinic prohibitions to treat or diagnose medical conditions? When may one set aside Biblical prohibitions to do the same? If one must drive to the hospital on Shabbat for an emergency, under what circumstances syould he drive himself and under what circumstances should he call a taxi? Should one try to minimize Shabbat violations in cases of medical emergencies and if so, how? We will learn the parameters of what may or may not be done in the area of medical treatment and diagnosis on Shabbat with many real, "practical" examples.

Philosophy of Rav Soloveitchik:
May
14 & 21
immediately after ma'ariv
45 minutes
Many of us have heard brilliant Torah and Jewish philosophical ideas that were originated by Rav Soloveitchik which have shaped our religious outlook. It's one thing to hear these ideas, but it's another thing to study these ideas from their source. In this two-week course, we will study a few of the Rav's shorter and more readily comprehensible Jewish philosophical essays and gain an even greater appreciation for the Rav's religious thought. The essays chosen will be made available beforehand for those who wish to read them before the class. |
